Soft and hard pomerons

چکیده

Regge theory provides an excellent description of small-x structurefunction data from Q = 0 up to the highest available values. The large-Q data should also be described by perturbative QCD: the two descriptions must agree in the region where they overlap. However, at present there is a serious lack in our understanding of how to apply perturbative QCD at small x. The usual lowestorder or next-to-lowest order expansion is not valid, at least not until Q becomes much larger than is usually assumed; a resummation is necessary, but as yet we do not know how to do this resummation.

We consider simple-pole descriptions of soft elastic scattering for pp, p̄p, πp and Kp. We work at t and s small enough for rescatterings to be neglected, and allow for the presence of a hard pomeron. After building and discussing an exhaustive dataset, we show that simple poles provide an excellent description of the data in the region −0.5 GeV2 ≤ t ≤ −0.1 GeV2, 6 GeV≤ √s ≤ 63 GeV. We show that...

We quantify the central inclusive background contributions to exclusive Higgs production at the LHC arising from double-Pomeron-exchange processes. We consider the H → bb̄ signal. We study processes mediated by the fusion of two ‘hard’ Pomerons, and also by the fusion of ‘soft’ Pomerons. The latter background is found to be very small, and the former is found to be less than the exclusive signal...

Pomeron physics: an update

Key issues in pomeron physics include whether the hard and soft pomerons are distinct objects, and whether the hard pomeron is already present in amplitudes at Q = 0. It is urgent to learn how to combine perturbative and nonperturbative concepts, and to construct a sound theory of perturbative evolution at small x. Other questions are whether screening corrections are small, and gap survival pr...

The soft and the hard pomerons: elastic scattering and unitarisation

The hard pomeron component needed to reproduce small-x data seems to be present in elastic scattering at moderate energy. If this is the case, it is likely that the total cross section at the LHC will be appreciably larger than previously expected. 1 The effective trajectory Historically, hadronic exchanges have been remarkably well described by the simple-pole model of Donnachie and Landshoff ...

An Introduction to Pomerons

This talk is an attempt to clarify for experimentalists what do we (theorists) mean when we are saying “Pomeron”. I hope, that in this talk they will find answers to such questions as what is Pomeron, what we have learned about Pomeron both experimentally and theoretically, what is the correct strategy to study Pomeron experimentally and etc. I also hope that this talk could be used as a guide ...
